Exploring the History of Elk Velvet Antler

A medicine that has been around for thousands of years and has been used in various cultures throughout the world is probably one you would trust; right? Elk velvet antler (EVA) has been used in traditional Chinese Holistic Formulas for more than 2,000 years, and in other cultures for potentially even longer.
Historical claims of the uses of EVA date back as far as 3,000 years ago. Some texts from the period suggest that EVA can cure impaired vision and hearing among other things. Almost all historical claims surrounding EVA’s uses promote the idea that EVA could aid in digestion and improve stamina.
The long history of EVA shows its value in medicine throughout the world, but what about in the US with our rigorous FDA standards? In 1999, a clinical study done in the US found that EVA was beneficial in treating arthritis. The study also found that EVA may be anti-aging and beneficial to blood and circulatory systems.
Since that initial study in 1999, physicians in North America have used EVA to treat fatigue, impotence, fibromyalgia, depression, and arthritis. EVA has also been used to increase immunity, energy, stamina, and decrease inflammation. Being viewed by many as a versatile and quality supplement ingredient.

How is EVA Extracted?

Both deer and elk have antlers where velvet can be used for medicinal purposes. The velvet covers the antler and cartilage on a deer or elk as it develops into antlers, but is calcified by the time the animal is ready to shed its antlers for the season.
Let’s clear up the most common misconception about antlers: antlers and horns are not the same things. Antlers grow on most members of the deer family and are appendages of the skull. Antlers, unlike horns, are shed every year, so utilizing their velvet for medicinal purposes is not cruel to the animals like dehorning can be. In fact, EVA is a considered renewable, eco-friendly resource.
At Wapiti, we have a team of dedicated specialists and a herd veterinarian that oversees our antler harvesting process. We try to be as handsoff with our elk as possible, so when the time comes once a year to bring in the racks of antlers, we have a system set up that’s low stress for all of the animals involved. All in all, we harvest an elk’s antlers and get it back to it’s herd in under 30 seconds.
After the velvet-covered antlers are removed, the antlers in velvet are frozen and then can be processed in many ways to prepare it for its next life as a supplement.
In the US, elk are typically raised on farms most often located in Minnesota or Wisconsin. Farmers with elk are able to utilize top quality processes that result in the best life possible for their animals, which ultimately results in the best product. Wolf Creek Elk Ranch is a 320-acre elk ranch that is proud to be a pollution-free expanse of land that is home to many of healthy elk that are producing some of Minnesota’s premier antler velvet. Our ranch, Wolf Creek Elk Ranch, is free of pollution, away from the city, and encourages a stress-free environment as we allow no more than one elk per acre of land to prevent overpopulation
