What Your Big Breed Dog Should Be Chewing On and Why

Dogs have a penchant for chewing. And while it might seem like a troubling and destructive habit at first glance, chewing is actually a perfectly natural, healthy behavior that plays a major role in cleaning a canine’s teeth and managing boredom. That’s why it’s very important to provide your pup with stimulating and safe objects to chomp on from time to time. Regrettably, considering the thousands of dog chews on the market, it can be tough to determine which products will best cater to your dog’s chewing needs. This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that some canines are very particular about which materials they’ll gnash away at. For example, some dogs enjoy soft chews, while others will turn down anything but the toughest bones.
At Wapiti Labs, we understand full well that every canine has unique chewing preferences, which is why we produce a wide range of elk antler chews for dogs in many different sizes and textures. These products are harvested from healthy ranch-raised elk, and their freshness makes them highly resistant to splintering and safe for pets to chew. Our elk antler chews also contain tasty, nutritious marrow (a soft substance found in the cavities of bones) that acts as a natural toothbrush when consumed, keeping your dog’s pearly whites clean and healthy. Today, we’ll be discussing three of our chew products that work wonderfully for big breed dogs.

Hard Chews vs. Soft Chews

Each dog develops unique chewing rates and habits as it grows up. And, believe it or not, even the largest canines can be classified as “soft chewers” if they chomp on their toys or bones (relatively) gently. In a majority of cases, soft chewing dogs adore bones that are pliable enough to chew through without significant effort (splits), while pups that love to chew aggressively prefer more hardy bones (whole chews). You might be tempted to buy tougher products for your soft chewer to prevent them from gnawing through their treat too quickly, but doing so might cause your dog to avoid his or her new chew completely. Fortunately, our split chews last almost as long as our whole chews, meaning that you won’t have to worry too much about longevity when considering which product to pick up for your dog.

Chews for Large and Extra Large Breeds

Large and extra large dogs are classified as breeds typically weighing more than 40 pounds and less than 100 pounds. Dogs in this category include labs, collies and retrievers, and they usually have relatively strong biting power, necessitating the use of highly durable chews. Bear in mind that the following products can be purchased for giant breeds as well, but they may not last as long as our x-large split and whole chews.

8” Split Elk Antler Chew

Our 8” split chews are perfect for large and extra large dog breeds that are soft chewers. These splits are water rinsed only (with no chemical treatments) and come from ranch-raised elk that are tested annually for Chronic Wasting Disease and Tuberculosis. Although they typically don’t last quite as long as our whole antler chews, our splits will keep your canine’s teeth in peak condition and provide hours upon hours of chomping fun.

8” Whole Elk Antler Chew

Wapiti’s 8” whole chews are a fantastic choice for hard chewers. These products are highly resistant to aggressive chewing from even the largest dog breeds and last significantly longer than rawhide bones. If you own a large or extra large dog that loves to chew, then definitely consider grabbing one of these.

Chews for Giant Breeds

Giant canines are classified as breeds weighing 100 pounds or more. These massive and hardy animals (including Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds) have tremendous biting power, and only the largest and strongest elk antler products can stand up to their strength for long.

8” X-Large Split Elk Antler Chew

Wapiti’s 8” x-large splits will keep soft chewing giant breeds thoroughly entertained for hours on end. Despite their large size and toughness, these splits are still pliable enough to keep soft chewers stimulated until they reach the delicious and nutritious marrow inside.

8” X-Large Whole Elk Antler Chew

Our 8” x-large whole chews are the largest and most durable elk antlers for dogs we sell. Thanks to their exceptional strength, these products will pose a potent chewing challenge for your giant breed pup, regardless of how powerful his or her bite is.
Note: No matter which chew product you choose for your dog, we highly encourage you to supervise your pup while he or she enjoys it. Although it rarely occurs, even elk antler chews can splinter during use, creating a potential choking hazard for your pet.
