What is Elk Velvet Antler (EVA)?

Immature elk antlers start as cartilage covered in the skin with a short, dense fur called velvet because it looks and feels like velvet. This velvet allows oxygen-rich blood to reach growing antlers as the antlers mature. Eventually, the cartilage calcifies into bone, and the elk would rub the velvet off their antlers because it becomes quite itchy. Elk Velvet Antler (EVA) refers to the whole elk antler harvested during the velvet stage of growth.

At Wolf Creek Elk Ranch, we harvest antlers once a year in the springtime from healthy bulls while they are still in velvet stage when they are covered in velvet. We carry out this humane, low-stress process under the direction of the herd veterinarian.
